Funny but note-worthy temporary internet file story

website design san diegoI just had a frustrated experience with one of my clients that I wanted to share as a learning lesson for those reading this.  I just had to make sure to share an experience with my readers tonight that I just had with a client of mine that I am designing a website for.  I have been diligently making changes, uploading new graphics, tweeking the text for the search engines, manipulating HTML codes, ect for the past month.

So, I have been working on this site for about 2 months now because it turned out to be such a large project.  We originally agreed to do a 5-10 page site, but as of this post, it’s 40 pages!  So, during this past month, I have been making hundreds of changes to my client’s site design.

As I was working on the site, I noticed I hadn’t heard from my client in about 3 weeks.  Typically I would email her once or twice a week informing her of my work and she would usually reply back with comments or suggestions that she would like to see.  But for some reason, I noticed that I hadn’t heard from her in about 3 weeks.  I was beginning to get a little worried that she was unhappy, or too busy, or just gone out of the office.

Sure enough, I got a phone call tonight with my client at the other end of the line screaming at me because she hasn’t seen any progress on her website and she couldn’t believe that nothing had been done for 3 weeks!  Now, I was extremely taken back by this, and very confused at her attitude.  After all, the site is 98% done, and I had other collegues tell me that it was one of the best they had seen me do!

So, after reluctantly listening to her scream at me for 5 minutes, I began to dig a little and I discovered that she doesn’t understand what “temporary internet files” can do to a computer and how to manage them correctly.  I had her go to her internet options tab and click on the delete temporary internet files tab and low and behold her brand new site loaded beautifully!

My poor customer felt so bad and apologized profusely to me over the phone.  She had not deleted her temporary internet file folder in about 3 months!  We came to realize together that she has not seen ANY of the new changes I had uploaded to her website for the past month!

My point to posting this on my blog, is to help you understand that temporary internet files should be deleted every day, if you can remember, and at least once a week if at all possible.   Not only does it cause incidents to happen, as the one above with my client thinking that I was lazy, it is a source of many viruses and problems that can happen to your operating system.

So please, make sure you delete your temporary internet files when you can, especially if myself or another web designer is designing a site for your business!
